Home Remedies for Sore Throat





  • Gargle with disprin and warm water to get relief from sore throat


  • Mix dry coriander and sugar in equal amounts and chew a tsp twice or thrice daily to get relief from throat pain.


  • Have small quantities of pineapple juice at frequent intervals to get relief from sore throat.


  • Apply liquorice paste like a paint around the throat for relief.


  • Eat a plain betel with liquorice 2-3 times a day.


  • Drink tea boiled with ginger and a few tulsi leaves 2-3 times a day.


  • Gargle with warm salt water at least twice a day. However do not make gargling sounds as this may aggravate the soreness.


  • Pound 2-3 cloves, garlic and add to a cupful of honey. Keep for 1-2 days. Have one teaspoon thrice a day.


  • Drink lots of water (10-12 glasses) a day since most throat problems are intensified by dehydration.


  • Have the mixture of ½ teaspoon honey and ½ teaspoon lemon juice every 1-2 hours.


  • Add two tablespoon of fenugreek seeds to 6 cups of water. Heat on low flame for 15-20 minutes. Cool to bearable temperature. Strain and gargle 2-3 times a day with this.


  • Heat a cup of milk . Add 1-2 pinch of turmeric powder (haldi) mix well and drink at might.

Home Remedies for Dandruff



There are many reasons for dandruff. Less blood supply to the scalp, eating habits, mental worries, not maintaining the hair properly. Here are some home remedies which you can follow for a dandruff free hair.

  • Massage the hair with heated coconut oil or olive oil. Then apply lemon juice. After half-an-hour, wash with a baby shampoo. Repeat this twice a week till the dandruff gets completely reduced.
  • Keep your hair brush,towel and comb clean, wash with disinfectants once a week
  • Soak gooseberry in milk for one full day. Grind it well along with the milk. Now apply this paste to the hair and wash after some time. This helps in removing the dandruff effectively.
  • Grind urud dhal and mustard with water and apply to hair and wash after some time.
  • Put neem flower in gingely oil and massage hair with this oil to get relief from dandruff.
  • Another effective method is, Put hibiscus flower, shikakkai and neem leef in rice starch and heat it. Apply this to hair to remove dandruff.
  • Fenugreek seeds are also effective in reducing dandruff. Soften them in water and apply to the scalp every morning. After an hour or so, wash with soap nut. This will keep dandruff away and prevents falling hair.
  • The ingredients you will need are curd, honey and lemon. Use two tablespoons of curd and mix with three drops of honey and three drops of lemon juice. Mix together and apply to the scalp, leave on for fifteen minutes, then scrub for fifteen minutes.
  • Mix olive oil and almond oil and apply to scalp and leave on for five minutes. Once it starts to tingle rinse and shampoo.
  • Boil a handful of neem leaves in 4 teacups of water. After cooling and filtering, use for rinsing hair.
  • Before washing your hair, rub aloe vera gel into your scalp. Leave it on for 10 minutes, and shampoo your hair as usual.
  • Mix 6 spoonfuls water, a spoonful of lemon juice, half a teaspoon of salt and two spoonfuls of pure vinegar. Apply on the scalp with cotton wool. After shampooing, rinse again with vinegar water. Continue this for three months.
  • Henna mixed with old curds and lemon juice is also extremely effective in controlling dandruff. Make the paste a day before and keep on for at least two hours. Lovely burgundy highlights and dandruff-free hair guaranteed.

Home Remedies for Head LIce



  • Fill half of the pillow cover with tulsi leaves and ask your child to sleep in that pillow. Continue for 4 – 5 days to get relief from lice problem.

  • Dry the seeds of custard apple, powder it , mix with water and apply to hair scalp nicely. On regular use the lice disappears.

  • Grind garlic, mix with lemon juice and apply to hair, leave for some time and wash.

  • Mix 1 glass of lemon juice and 1 flat teaspoon of ginger. Apply on dry hair and rub, cover with a shower cap and wait 8 hours (or go to sleep) then wash and comb the hair.

  • Vinegar is also useful in removing head lice. Take 3-4 tablespoon of vinegar, add 2 tablespoon of lemon juice and garlic paste. Mix it well and apply it on the scalp. Allow it to dry for 2 hours and wash it off. Do this 3-4 times a month.

  • Olive oil is also very useful in killing head lice. Apply olive oil on your hair and cover it with a plastic bag. Keep it overnight, later with the help of lice comb take out all the head lice. Repeat this after every 10 days. It is very easy and effective way to get rid of head lice.

  • Almond is another useful home remedy for head lice. Soak 10-12 almonds in water and make its paste. Add 3-4 tablespoon of lemon juice in it. Apply this mixture over your scalp, and allow it to dry for 1-2 hours. Wash hair with cold water.

Home Remedies for Menstruation Problems



Excessive bleeding

  • Grind some betell leaves into a fine paste. Take 1 teaspoon with warm water and drink some cold water as well.
  • Grind 10 fresh lead buds of figs and apply on the lower abdomen below the navel for a few hours. Repeat this frequently.
  • Boil 1 teaspoon coriander seeds in 2 cups water till it is reduced to 1 cup. Add sugar to taste and drink when lukewarm. Repeat twice or thrice a day.

Painful and irregular Periods:

  • A piece of fresh ginger, ground and boiled in a cup of water. The infusion is taken thrice daily after meals along with sugar.
  • Take carrot juice every day for three months.
  • Cinnamon powder along with limejuice taken every day is also found to be very helpful to get regular menstrual cycle.
  • Take fenugreek sprouts 2table spoon with your salad.
  • Sesame seeds are also used as a home remedy for menstrual problem. Have 1 teaspoon of sesame powder twice daily. It will help in menstrual delay and reduces the spasmodic pain during menstruation.


Periods - Safe ways to postpone and prepone.
If you suddenly get at odd times:
Buy sabja seeds ( used for falooda, also called tukmaria or falooda seeds). Soak 1 tsp in ¼ cup curds overnight. Swallow it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Bleeding will stop.

To postpone:

  • Everyday in the morning take the above sabja seed – curd mixture, eat 2 bananas & drink a cup of water. You are not likely to get it the whole day !
  • On an empty stomach eat a handful of raw fried gram ( pottukadalai) & drink a cup of water. You can have coffee only after minimum one hour. You are not likely to get it the whole day.

To prepone:

  • Eat seasame seeds+ jaggery ( 1 tbsp each) together.
  • Eat a tiny pea size camphor wrapped in one “ vethalai” – betel leaf.
  • On an empty stomach drink 1 tbsp of ginger juice mixed with 2-3 tbsp of jaggery.
  • Mix juice of 1 large pomegranate and 1 glass of sugar cane juice (Have 4 times a day)
  • A Fast with only buttermilk, curd, curd and rice or bananas proves very effective.
  • Avoid raw vegetables and fruits such as orange, mosambi, papaya, pineapple and spices.
  • Drink plenty of water to which a teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt has been added to guard against dehydration.
  • A strong cup of unsweetened black tea is very effective.

Home Remedies for Ulcers










Stomach ulcers:
  • Rice taken regularly with coconut milk is a good remedy for stomach ulcers.
  • Have a piece of bread with butter everyday morning to get good relief from ulcer pain.
  • Drinking apple juice early in the morning reduces stomach pain.

  • Eating Tender neem leaves regulary is a good medicine for all stomach related disorders.
  • Eating cabbage regularly is a good medicine for stomach ulcers.

  • Eating a cup of agathi keerai (green) everyday controls stomach ulcers.

  • Eating a piece of raw potato everyday helps in treating ulcers.

  • Add salt to raw onion and eat it to get relief from stomach pain

  • Mix beetroot juice with honey and drink it to get good relief from stomach ulcers.

  • Include bitter guord regularly in diet. Cut bitter guord into pieces, dry it and make it into a powder and have 1 tsp everyday with hot water.

  • For stomach and intestine ulcers, take gooseberry juice with curds to get a good cure.

  • Manathakkali Keerai (green)is a very good cure for ulcers, both stomach ulcer and mouth ulcers.

Mouth ulcers:


  • Mix some coconut milk with honey and massage the gums 3 to 4 times a day.

  • Gargle with or apply freshly extracted coconut milk from a ripe coconut frequently.

  • Coriander decoction prepared by boiling 1 teaspoon coriander seeds) in 1 cup water, gargled when lukewarm, frequently.

  • Chew one or two tender leaves of fig (anjeer) and leaf buds frequently and wash the mouth with warm water.

  • Soak 1 tablespoon crushed liquorice (mulathi) root in 2 cups water for 2 to 3 hours and use it for gargling frequently.

  • Boil 2 tablespoon fenugreek (methi) leaves along with ½ cup green gram (moong dal) and 10 small onions. Eat regularly.

  • Fenugreek seeds,fried and powdered. add to drinking water. Drink 2-3 times daily for 2-3 days.

  • An infusion of fenugreek (methi) leaves gargled 5-6 times daily for a couple of days.

  • Chew curry leaves nicely and swallow it to get relief from mouth ulcers.

Home Remedies for Burns


Following are some of the effective home remedies to heal burns fast and to prevent the formation of painful blisters.



  • Water is the best therapy for burns. It is very common to get burns while cooking. Do not panic, just show the burnt portion on the running cold water for some time, till you feel comfortable. This not only gives relief from pain but also prevents the formation of blisters.

  • Applying the pulp of banana cools the burns and gives fast healing.

  • Grind henna leaves with water and apply on the burnt area.

  • Cut potato slices and keep on the affected area and tie a bandage to get quick relief from pain.

  • Make a salt solution and apply on the burnt area. This gives more burning sensation but helps in fast healing and not leave behind scars.

  • To remove the blisters painlessly, take a betel leaf and boil in water for some time to make it soft. Then apply castor oil and keep on the affected area and tie a bandage. Repeat this frequently with fresh leaf till the blister breaks. It can also be left overnight.

  • Paste of curry leaves can also be applied on the affected area.

  • Take juice of basil(tulsi) leaves, mix with honey and apply on the wound and cover with a bandage for fast healing.

  • Grind neem leaves (tender ones) and mix with buttermilk and apply on the wound for quick healing.

  • Grind and apply methi leaves paste.

  • Applying little asoeftida on the wound immediately helps in removing burning sensation and also prevents boils.

  • Grind and apply radish paste on the wound, helps in reducing burning sensation and water secretion from the wound.

  • Put 2 tablespoons of yogurt on the burn and wait 15 minutes.

  • Put egg whites on the burn. Cut an onion and apply immediately on the burn.

  • Soak the burn in whole milk for 15 minutes.

Home Remedies for Piles




  • Manathakkali keerai with dhal removes the itching sensation in the anus and heals piles.

  • Take 1 table spoon of roasted black cumin seeds and mix with 1 tablespoon of unroasted black cumin seeds and powder both together. Take 1/2 a teaspoon of this mixture with a glass of water once a day.

  • Drink a glass of buttermilk with 1/4 tsp carom seed powder (ajwain) and a pinch of rock salt.

  • The jamun fruit should be taken with salt every morning for two or three months during its season.

  • Soak 2-3 dried figs in a glass of cold water overnight. Have it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Have them for 2-3 weeks for good results. It is effective in the treatment for ordinary as well as bleeding piles.

  • Mix 1 teaspoon fresh mint leaves juice with 1 teaspoon lemon juice & 1 tablespoon honey. Take 3 times a day for relief from piles.

  • Take ½ cup radish juice in the morning and night for a period of 1 month.

  • Boil 1 ripe banana in 1 cup of milk, mash well. Take 3-4 times a day.

  • Extract 3 teaspoon of bitter gourd juice, and mix in 1 glass of buttermilk, and drink on an empty stomach every morning, for a month.

  • Radish could prove to be useful home remedy in piles. Mix radish juice with a bit of salt and take it twice a day for around one and a half month.
